Wikipedia

Does anyone out there do Wikipedia?

If one is to believe the hype, it is an online, user-contributed encyclopedia that is revolutionary because it is so easy to use. Cory Doctorow even wrote an essay calling it as close to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as we are likley to get.

Except it is hardly easy to use. Oh sure, you can click on "Edit this Page," then add your own content or clean up someone else's for better usage and grammar. But then there's code...

I originated a page, for KUSM-TV, the PBS station out of MSU where I learned some of my TV production know-how. I knew I had written a stub, or too-short article, but didn't know how to designate it as such. In looking it up, I discovered some rather complicated code that creates that designation, and there were places in that code to fill in with appropriate title and classification. And someting about seeking approval for creating stub classification. Then I found out it was part of a red-link project, and one of their goals was to have each of the station pages feature an infobox. The infoboxes on other pages looked pretty cool, so I thought maybe I would do one for my new page. I couldn't see any obvious info on infoboxes other than contacting some other user. Also, though I know enough standard html to do standard web links, I didn't get the impression wiki links were just html code.

Thing is, I just want to write. Find something I know about that isn't written yet, then write about it. It seems like a neat place to do that, but I'm not sure if I just do that it won't murkify their planning system...

Anybody have guidance?
