I bought the cd The Langley Schools Music Project "Innocence & Despair" last weekend. I heard about it, and a couple tracks off it, on Public Radio last fall. It is a CD of children singing in some schools in British Columbia in the late 70's. It was recorded on a twotrack recorder with a couple microphones in an empty gymnasium, the ultimate in low-tech. The teacher was doing something never before done there. He was teaching the kids the songs they wanted to sing, popular music, rather than kid's songs. He collected money from them, and had LP's pressed. (For you younger folks, that's the larger of the weird round black things that supposedly have music on them.)
There is definitely something strange and melancholy about it. I bought it partly out of novelty. i also bought it because I was a singing child a few years later in the same spirit as these songs. Also, I know a few Canadians who are also roughly contemporary to these kids.
