Dayton's Auditorium Christmas Show

Oh, so those of you in the vicinity of the Twin Cities Metro, I highly recommend the new Dayton's Auditorium Christmas show. It's based on "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and don't let the gargantuan popularity of that scare you away. It's the best Auditorium Show I've seen in years, and I have been going to them all recently...

For those who do not know the wonder that is the Dayton's Auditorium Show, I will try to explain. Dayton's is a department store company who owns Daytons, Target, Mervyns, Hudson's, Marshall Field, and probably some more that I am missing. In their main showcase store in downtown Minneapolis, in their 8th-floor Auditorium, they put on a Christmas display. They've been doing them since the 70's, and I still have vague memories of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," the first one they did. If you can imagine one of those animated holiday window displays, but one you actually walk right into. There is a meandering path through a massive display, complete with buildings and all sorts of animated figures. And it's free, due to the fact that you have to go through five floors of Dept. store to get to the show.

Some of the past couple of years have been somewhat unimaginative, even uninteresting, but the Harry Potter display this year puts those to shame. It was a pretty immersive experience, and I'd bet a kid would just be blown away. I was impressed.

If you get a chance, go see it, and if you live far away, I'm sorry. I do hear that they've been touring their previous years out to Marshall Field and Hudson's and the like, so maybe you'll get a chance sometime...
